Therapy Isn’t Just for “Crazy” People — And Other Myths We Need to Retire

Let’s set the record straight.

Somewhere along the way, therapy got a bad rap. People started whispering the word like it was something shameful. Like going to therapy meant something was wrong with you. That you were weak. Or broken. Or “crazy.”

But let me tell you something real:Going to therapy doesn’t mean you’re crazy. It means you’re courageous.

Here are a few myths we need to bury once and for all:

Myth 1: “Therapy is only for people who’ve had major trauma.”

Nope. Therapy isn’t just for people with a tragic backstory or a crisis. It’s for people navigating breakups, burnout, identity shifts, anxiety, big life decisions… you name it.If you have a mind, you qualify.

Myth 2: “Talking to a friend is the same thing.”

Listen—I’m all for strong friendships. But your best friend can’t (and shouldn’t) be your therapist. A trained therapist helps you unpack things neutrally, spot patterns, and actually work toward healing—not just vent. Therapy is a relationship that’s all about you, without guilt, pressure, or judgment.

Myth 3: “It’s too expensive.”

Yes, therapy can be an investment—but there are options. Sliding scales, community clinics, telehealth, student interns (yep, like me!). Mental health is healthcare. And guess what? It’s worth budgeting for you.

Myth 4: “Therapists will judge me.”

We’re not here to shame you—we’re here to support you. Therapists have heard it all. Nothing you say is “too much,” and you don’t have to have your story all polished and pretty before you walk in.

Myth 5: “Therapy takes forever.”

It’s not a life sentence. Some people go for a few sessions, others for longer—it depends on your needs and goals. Therapy is about what works for you, not what works for everyone else.

Here’s the truth:

You don’t have to wait for your life to fall apart to get support. You don’t need a diagnosis to deserve care. You don’t need permission to want peace.

Therapy is brave. Therapy is healing. Therapy is normal.

So if you’ve been thinking about it—this is your sign.

🖤 You don’t have to do it all alone.
